Important Information
Why should I run for a Student Government Association Office?
There are several reasons you should consider an SGA Officer position. One important reason is the opportunity to provide support for fellow students by keeping the administration aware of the issues that are important to students.
SGA Officers are the student’s voice in College decision-making; therefore, SGA serves as the liaison between students and the college administration.
SGA also plans and sponsors many of the activities for the student body during the
activity period (M&W from 1:20pm-2:20pm). These activities are free and are the social connection for the campus.
Another reason to get involved in SGA is the opportunity to engage in community services. SGA identifies and participates in various community service projects each semester. Members have the opportunity to assist community agencies such as AIM, Headstart, etc. Some of the activities from this past year include, “Angel Tree,” “Benevolence in November,” voter registration drives, etc.
Lastly, there are many opportunities for growth and leadership. Training will be given and an advisor is assigned for guidance. SGA not only enhances specific skills of specific executive positions, but also develops skills by serving on college-wide committees.
SGA is a great way to enhance or develop leadership skills, exercise community service on and off campus, and support the student body.
What offices are available?
The four offices of the Executive Team are the President, Vice President, Secretary,
and Treasurer. See Qualifications and Duties for additional information on the qualifications to run for office and the duties/responsibilities.
What is the election process?
Elections are held annually in the Spring semester. The election process consists of declaring candidacy for an office by applying and submitting documents, review of
qualifications by staff, once approved, a campaign period (all materials must be
reviewed by Advisor prior to disbursement and taken down the day after elections), and an actual ballot election.
For a student’s name to be placed on the ballot, the potential candidate must:
- Meet the qualifications for office (see attached).
- Complete an application indicating intention to run for an office and submit to the Student Life and Counseling Office in Miller Hall 112 by February 19th.
