Dr. James Hudgins Tells Tri-County Tech's Class of 2000
To Be Somebody as They Fulfill Their Roles in Community
HOLD FOR RELEASE ON MAY 15 AFTER 8 P.M., PLEASE
PENDLETON --- Be somebody as you journey to fulfill your roles in the community, Dr. James Hudgins, nationally acclaimed executive director of the S.C. Technical College System, told the Class of 2000 at Tri-County Technical College's 37th annual commencement Monday evening.
Using the same words that Abraham Lincoln's mother said to her son as she lay critically ill, Dr. Hudgins challenged the 366 graduates to "be somebody -- because you are, because you can be, and because you ought to be.
"One of the most important plateaus you can attain in personal self-development is the capacity to affirm, I am somebody, I am important, I can do it," he said.
He quoted William James, an American psychologist, who said, 'The greatest discovery of my generation is that people can change their lives by changing their attitude.'
"I challenge you to depart this graduation with the affirmation: I can and I will make a unique contribution," said Dr. Hudgins.
"Affirm your worth and set your goals," Dr. Hudgins added.
"Be somebody because you ought to be, because there are those who are counting on you, those who are rooting for you. Perhaps it is a parent, a spouse a child or a teacher," he explained.
Prior to his role as director, Dr. Hudgins served for 13 years as president of Midlands Technical College in Columbia. During his presidency, Midlands doubled its enrollment to become the largest technical college in South Carolina and the third largest college in the state.
Dr. Hudgins referenced an event four years ago when Vice President Al Gore visited Midlands Tech and met with three students and community leaders on the campus. Dr. Hudgins remembered a female in her mid-30s who told Vice President Gore that she returned to college because she had difficulty in helping her children with their homework. By the time she met with Gore, she had earned a GED, completed her associate degree and was enrolled in a four-year university. "However, she told Vice President Gore that what she was most proud of was that she had been able to help her children, both of whom were honor roll students in middle school. They were depending on her and she came through. Who is depending on you?" asked Dr. Hudgins. "I challenge you to exercise and stretch your self-concept and your will to become the full measure of your potential," he said.
He ended his remarks with the words of President John F. Kennedy, who in his 1961 inaugural speech, said, "For of those, to whom much is given, much is required. All this will not be finished in the first 100 days nor in 1,000 days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even in our lifetime of this planet. But let us begin."
"Graduates of Tri-County Technical College," said Dr. Hudgins, "in the words of John Kennedy, 'let us begin' the next leg of your journey toward achieving your potential. Be Somebody!"
Following Dr. Hudgins'address, President Don Garrison and other college officials presented degrees, diplomas and certificates to the following graduates:
