PENDLETON --- What you bring to life in your heart makes a difference
in your behavior, your performance and your potential, Dr. James Hudgins,
nationally acclaimed president of the S.C. Technical College System,
told the Class of 2005 at Tri-County Technical College’s 42nd annual
commencement Monday evening.
He quoted William James, an American psychologist, who said, 'You
can change your life by changing your attitude.' Dr. Hudgins congratulated
the 392 graduates on their academic achievement and challenged them
to "add the essential personal dimensions of success -- attitude,
self confidence and assertiveness."
"Your attitude will not solve every problem, but it can have
a powerful influence in helping you to overcome the obstacles that you
will encounter in your career and may separate you from the crowd,"
said Dr. Hudgins.
“Who you are makes a difference,” he added.
"Most of us can do much more than we have ever allowed ourselves
to believe and an enhanced self concept will lead to positive action,
making a difference in the use of our potential. At this College, you
have laid the foundation; now go forth and build on your potential,"
he said.
He ended his remarks with the words of Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick: "Great
living begins with a picture held firmly in your mind of the kind of
person you want to be. Hold that image always before you and you will
be drawn to it."
As president of the South Carolina Technical College System, Dr. Hudgins
is committed to fulfilling the System’s commitment to business and industry
to provide the workforce of the future that our State’s employers demand.
During his six-year tenure, he has worked with the System’s sixteen
college presidents to build a strong coalition committed to enhancing
higher education opportunities for the people of South Carolina and
to support the State’s economic development efforts.
Prior to his role as system president, Dr. Hudgins served for 13 years
as president of Midlands Technical College in Columbia. During his presidency,
Midlands doubled its enrollment to become the largest technical college
in South Carolina and the third largest college in the state.
Among his most recent accolades are the 1997 National Leadership award
from the National Council for Organizational and Staff Development and
the 1998 Distinguished Service Award from the S.C. Commission on Higher
Education.
He holds A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Bob Jones University and
has an M. A. degree in Educational Administration from Furman University.
