PENDLETON ---  Tri-County Technical College’s athletic programs are gaining visibility and momentum.

To complement the College’s existing Men’s Soccer and Golf teams, Vinson Burdette, who serves as Dean of Student Development and Athletic Director, hopes to add a women’s team sport and to compete at the varsity level in the near future.  The Athletics Advisory Committee is communicating this and more via a new website, www.tctcsports.com, launched April 6.

Three years ago, Tri-County’s Men’s Golf Team was established, with the Men’s Soccer Team following the next year.  Both teams are sanctioned by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and compete at the club level in NJCAA’s Region X.  After their first year of competing both Men’s Golf and Soccer teams were turning heads among intercollegiate coaches all over the Southeast.

“Athletics provides an opportunity for learning outside the classroom and fosters the development of teamwork and leadership skills among student athletes,” said Burdette.  “Many life lessons are learned through participating in athletics,” he added.

He’s gotten positive comments from players, who, he says, are “thankful for the opportunity to fulfill a dream of competing at the college level in their chosen sport.  It adds a dynamic that enriches the college experience for all students.”

Athletic programs also boost the College’s image in the three-county service area and across the state and the Southeast, he said.  “Competing with other colleges and universities has generated positive exposure for Tri-County.”

Burdette urges students interested in playing a sport at Tri-County, along with sports fans, to visit the new website to check schedules and tournament results, as well as to communicate with him or the coaches by e-mail.  “The website provides a way to interact with the Athletic Department,” he said.

Soccer tryouts are scheduled for May so interested persons should contact Coach Jonathan McCombs at 646-1379 or jmccombs@tctc.edu for more information.  For information on golf tryouts, contact Coach Doug Allen at 646-1408 or dallen1@tctc.edu.
