Tri-County's Educators of the Year
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1/10/2006
(By Lisa Garrett)
PENDLETON --- Three faculty/staff members have been honored as Tri-County
Technical College’s Educators of the Year.
Faye
Allen, of Williamston, director of Fiscal Affairs, is the College’s
outstanding administrator; Doug Allen, of Anderson, Industrial Technology
department head, is the outstanding instructor; and Sandra Roddey, of
Anderson, administrative assistant for the Arts and Sciences Division,
is the outstanding staff nominee.
Mrs. Allen joined Tri-County’s Business Office 18 years ago, and since
1991, she also has worked as an adjunct instructor for the College’s
evening Accounting classes.
She was among the 13 financial officers who successfully completed
a 75-hour certification program through the Government and Finance Officers
Association of South Carolina in 2001. She is a Certified Government
Finance Officer (CGFO) and is one of five CGFOs in the State’s technical
college system, and among the 100-plus CGFOs in the State.
Comprehensive financial reporting earned Tri-County's Division of Financial
and Administrative Services the highest form of recognition in the area
of governmental accounting and financial reporting. The Government Finance
Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded
a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to
Tri-County for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for
the past five years. Mrs. Allen prepares the CAFR.
She received the Presidential Medallion for Staff Excellence, the
highest award given for staff excellence at the College, in 2001. She
is former state treasurer for the South Carolina Technical Education
Association and is member of the S.C. Association of Government Purchasing
Officers.
She has served on various College committees and is currently the
project leader for the implementation of Banner, a fully integrated
suite of administrative systems that will be used by students, faculty
and staff.
Mrs. Allen holds an associate degree in Business from Tri-County (1985)
and a bachelor’s degree in Accounting (1987) and a master’s in Industrial
Education (1991), both from Clemson University.
She and her husband, Harold, live in Williamston.
Mr. Allen's excellence in the classroom and his commitment to students
earned him the Presidential Medallion for Instructional Excellence,
the highest award presented to Tri-County's faculty at the College's
commencement last year. He also was a top five finalist for the Governor's
Award for Teaching Excellence for 2005, in addition to being selected
as an Excellence Award winner for the National Institute for Staff and
Organizational Development.
For
the past two years he has been promoting and recruiting for the department
in an effort to make high school seniors aware of the many opportunities
available to those who enter technical careers. He also led a dual credit
program with area career centers, which enables students to get a head
start on college credit while completing high school requirements. As
a result, the freshman class headcount in the Industrial Electronics
Technology Department increased 20 percent. After teaching DC/AC Machines
to high school seniors at the Career and Technology Center in spring
2003, every student in that class enrolled as a full-time student at
Tri-County the next academic year.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Allen established a Men's Golf Team and
serves as golf coach and athletic director. The team won the Montreat
College Spring Invitational Tournament last year.
He serves on College committees, including the Recruitment and Retention,
Calendar, Placement and Integrated Curriculum. He also serves on the
advisory committee for the Electronics Department at the Career and
Technology Center.
Mr. Allen holds an associate in Arts degree from Anderson College and
an Industrial Electronics Technology degree from Tri-County Technical
College. He is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree at Clemson University.
He began his career at an electronics technician at Singer in 1979
and later worked as a process control engineer for nine years at Honeywell
Inc. He joined Tri-County in 1990.
He and his wife, Christy, have three children.
Mrs. Roddey joined Tri-County in 1989 as the administrative assistant
for the Arts and Sciences Division. In addition to her administrative
assistant duties, she developed a successful plan to increase the number
of division graduates. She tracks students who are nearing graduation,
prepares individual checklists and personally calls each student to
tell him or her just what he needs to graduate. Her hard work and initiative
have resulted in an increased number of graduating University Transfer
students. In addition, Mrs. Roddey maintains the advising system for
the College’s 1,000-plus University Transfer students.
She
received the Presidential Medallion for Staff Excellence in 2003. The
medallion goes to a person who has demonstrated over and over a strong
belief in the purpose and mission of the College.
A graduate of Tri-County herself, Mrs. Roddey holds an associate degree
in Business and was a member of the National Honor Society and Alpha
Zeta Beta, in addition to being on the Dean’s List.
At the College, she has served as the secretary for several standing
committees over the years. She and her husband, Don, have an adult son.
