Dr. Ronnie L. Booth Delivers Address to Summer Graduates

CONTACT: LISA GARRETT, 646-1506

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 8/7/2009
(By Lisa Garrett)

ANDERSON --- President Ronnie L. Booth offered Tri-County Technical College’s summer graduates five lessons that can be applied in life and at work at the College’s commencement ceremony.

Two hundred-and-ninety-nine graduates received degrees, diplomas and certificates at the College’s summer commencement held August 6 at the Anderson Civic Center.

“Each of you has developed a specialized skill or knowledge while at Tri-County that separates you from many others in our society. You may now be ready to hit the job market or you may be finishing an interim step along the way to more knowledge and skills. Whatever the case, one thing is for sure. You will neither live nor work in isolation.  You will live and work in family, in community, in this country and the larger context of an ever more global society and economy,” said Dr. Booth.

He outlined the following points in his address:

1.  Put first things first.  Decide what is really important to you in life, he said.  “Keep that as the bedrock, the starting and ending point, the central focus in your life and build other things around it.  Ask how new things that come along fit with your first-order values, the enduring things that matter to us when the veneer is pulled back.”

2.  Define who you are or others will do it for you.  Every relationship you are in will seek to define you in some way, he said.  “My best advice is to not only define yourself, but also think about your relationships and the role you play in each of them.”

3.  Set your direction.  Set a plan for life, he advised.  “If you have no life plan, no foundational values, then you will be continually whipsawed by circumstances and may wake up some place that you prefer not to be.  The best way to minimize that possibility is to establish your direction, set your standards and develop that all-important life plan.  The journey is much more enjoyable and meaningful when you do so.”

4.  Under promise and over deliver.  Be careful what you promise that you can do or deliver, he said.  “Deliver what you promise and a little more.  Instead of over promising and under delivering, leave others with whom you do business smiling because you gave a greater service, a better product, better care, higher quality, or superior value than they expected.  When you do that, others will want an encore performance.”

5. Never stop listening.  Never stop learning.  “To continue to grow intellectually, to improve in our skill area, to continue to develop relationships, and to have a chance to be successful, we must listen, listen, and then listen some more.  By listening, I mean doing so with our ears, our eyes, our emotions, all of our senses,” he concluded.
