PENDLETON ---  Harmony Hicks is the third Tri-County Technical College student to receive a statewide honor that recognizes scholastic achievements, hard work, dedication and service to the South Carolina Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (SCSCLS).

Harmony HicksHicks, a senior Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) honor student and the SCSCLS student forum chair, received the Keys to the Future Award March 25 at an annual Carolina Clinical Connection meeting in Myrtle Beach.  This honor is awarded annually to one MLT (two-year) or medical technologist (four–year) college student in the State.  This is the third consecutive year that a Tri-County student has won.

“As the SCSCLS Student Forum Chair, Harmony Hicks has provided leadership, service and a willingness to meet every request or challenge presented to the Student Society,” said Janis Livingston, SCSCLS treasurer.

Livingston said Hicks served as a S.C. Student Delegate to the National Society Meeting (American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science) and participated in training sessions for leadership development and professional issues related to the clinical laboratory.  She added that Harmony coordinated and participated in a fundraiser for the SCSCLS Student Society that raised  $300 from raffle ticket sales for gift baskets created by other students.

“Harmony also has been an excellent scholastic role model, winning second place in the SCSCLS Student Bowl at the 2009 meeting between the SC MLT/CLT Programs.  She is both personable and dependable; her accomplishments at the student level and her destiny as a ‘Young Professional’ make her the right choice for Keys to the Future,” said Livingston.

“I’m very honored to be chosen from two- and four-year nominees across the state,” said Hicks.  “I was very surprised to hear my name called.  I never expected to win.”

After graduating from Pendleton High School in 2001, Hicks headed to Erskine College where she received a biology degree.  She says her degree has helped in her coursework at Tri-County.  “It definitely contributed to my success.  I’ve always wanted to work in a lab.  I want to begin in a hospital setting and work my way up,” said Hicks, who will graduate May 12.

She says Tri-County ‘s MLT program has given her the hands-on, practical skills needed in today’s health care field.

In addition to her full-time studies, she is a work/study for the MLT department and works in the library, as well as a part-time job in retail.

She is a member of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, the SCSCLS and is the treasurer for Tri-County’s Future Laboratory Professionals Association.  She lives in Townville.
